This Web Site is designed to assist fuchsia enthusiasts, from novice to the dedicated exhibitor, to improve their growing techniques and achieve greater satisfaction. The Site will include Chapters on all aspects of fuchsia culture including hybridising, the raising of new cultivars. These pages will also discuss both new and old techniques and destroy some of the myths and discrepancies handed down from one generation to another virtually without question. It will separate misconception from fact through controlled testing of various techniques including insecticides, fungicides and other chemicals. Many books available on the subject of fuchsia culture are virtual copies of each other individualised only by writing techniques, photographs and line drawings. One exception is the set of books produced by Wagtails with individual paintings and line drawings of hundreds of individual cultivars with detailed descriptions. I have the set minus one copy. If ever they are re-issued treat yourself to the set, they are worth every penny. The growing techniques described in these Chapters have been derived from research, careful observation, and meticulous testing, using where applicable, control samples or items for comparison. These are mostly photographically recorded, some of which are reproduced within these pages for your enlightenment. A great deal of pleasure can be derived from growing fuchsias. It is without doubt the most versatile of all the species of flowering plants. The range include a large number of species with varying degrees of hardiness and literally thousands of lovely cultivars, again in both hardy and tender varieties. They range from true single through semi-double to large doubles in a huge range of colours. There are varieties suitable for baskets which cascade with flowers, others suitable for growing into standards and a large number especially suited for exhibition as show plants. There are others ideally suited for growing in containers on the patio or conservatory and in addition, there is a large collection of proven hardy varieties tested by various gardening organisations including the very respected R.H.S. The fuchsia is also grown in many countries world wide, notably America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Holland, Sweden, Demark, Canada, also many South American Countries. Most of these countries have dedicated Fuchsia Societies operating under the guidance of a parent society, e.g. The American Fuchsia Society, The British Fuchsia Society etc, in fact most of the countries mentioned have the luxury of very knowledgeable parent societies. Through this Web Site I have been contacted and have made friends with many fuchsia enthusiasts from all over the world discussing a myriad of questions and ideas. This Web Site is still under construction Chapters on hybridising, special structures, including the preparation and growing of baskets, standards and other shapes yet to be added. Also growing fuchsias for the garden using special techniques to bring these into flower weeks earlier than would normally be expected. My adage is has always been, 'Have fuchsias have fun '. I can only identify with the author. Enjoy my web site and feel free to contact me if you feel I can help. Dave Clark.
